Shams Dubai is a government-backed solar initiative run by DEWA (Dubai Electricity & Water Authority) that allows homes and businesses to generate their own solar power and connect it to the electricity grid.
Under the program, rooftop solar systems can be installed and safely integrated with DEWA’s network, enabling customers to reduce their electricity bills by using the solar energy they produce.
How Shams Dubai Works
When your solar system generates electricity:
Your home uses solar energy first
Any excess power is exported to the DEWA grid
That exported energy is credited to your electricity account
Credits are automatically used to offset future electricity consumption
This system is known as net metering, meaning you are credited for the energy you send back to the grid rather than paid cash for it.
Are There Government Rebates in Dubai?
Dubai does not offer direct cash rebates or subsidies for solar installations.
Instead, Shams Dubai provides value through:

In most cases, there's no need to turn your solar system off during a storm. Solar panels and inverters are designed to withstand tough Australian weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds.
However, if extreme weather is forecast — such as a cyclone or major flooding — it’s best to follow your system’s shutdown procedure as a precaution.
If you suspect that your system has been damaged or has come into contact with floodwater, do not attempt to inspect or restart it yourself. Contact an accredited installer to check it safely.

In most cases, solar panels require very little maintenance. Rainfall usually does a good job of keeping them clean, especially if your roof has a decent pitch.
However, if you notice a drop in system performance or if your panels are located near trees, dust, or bird activity, it might be worth getting them checked. In those cases, having a local handyman or professional give them a gentle clean can help restore efficiency.
You don’t need to clean them regularly — but keeping an eye on your system’s output will help you know if and when it’s worth doing.
